BREAKOUT SESSION # 3

Creating Opportunities - Alternative Approaches to Business Development

Overview:
Life insurance is a declining part of the consumer balance sheet. Over the past 25 years the number of individual life insurance policies sold has reduced by about 50%. The industry life insurance industry has been moving upscale, more than doubling the average face amount over the same period, and leaving the so-called middle market unserved.

The growth in brokerage channels has meant a reduced investment in new, younger agents who can sell to their peers. Insurance agents actually seem to be aging faster than the population.

Life insurance is in danger of becoming a niche product. Where will the business come from in a decade? This session will explore the question and the possibilities.

Financial reporting changes continue- What will the impact be on the industry?

Overview
With the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards behind us you would hope we could have a year of calm following the storm. But this is not the case. With another draft standard on the valuation of insurance and reinsurance contracts expected out in 2012 the industry remains in limbo. In addition, the International Accounting Standards Board has released a number of new standards which are coming into effect in the next few years while a number remain in development. One thing is for certain the pace of change will continue for years to come. In this session we will provide you an update on the new and changing standards and discuss how they might impact the industry.

Longevity Risk and Practical Solutions

Overview
With over 20 trillion of longevity risk globally and 1 trillion in Canada, where a small (1%) changes in annual mortality improvement can result in as much as a 5% change in value, it is no wonder that longevity risk is fast becoming the new elephant in the room. We look at various aspects of longevity risk, with a focus on financial impact and practical executable solutions.

Speaker:
Gabrielle Boulianne, Phd
Sr Scientist, Hospital for Sick Children

Dr Boulianne, holds a Canada Research Chair in Molecular and Developmental Neurobiology where her research involves using, Drosphilia melanogaster, the fruit fly, as a model system to identify the genes responsible for Alzheimer's and human aging.

While it is assumed that ageing and lifespan are influenced by genetic factors, the identity of these factors remains largely unknown. Boulianne has previously found that over-expression of a single gene, superoxide dismutase (SOD1), in the motorneurons of the Drosophila, increases the lifespan of normal fruit flies by up to 40 percent. This suggests that individual genes acting in specific cell types can have a profound effect on lifespan. Boulianne's goal is to use the powerful genetic methods available in the Drosophila model to identify genes that regulate aging and determine the lifespan of an organism.
